Getting Started
This build needs very little to function. At a bare minimum I would say you need:
- Leyline Connection
- Possessed (skill)
- Blood Bullet
- Cannon Pistol
- Sweep Kick
- You need mana but only one point.
- One-hand weapon of choice.
Important quest milestones:
- Get Possessed (skill) and Brigand's Backpack from the Friendly Immaculate before joining The Holy Mission of Elatt.
- Get Divine Assistance from Doubts and Secrets.
- Make sure to complete Blood Under The Sun so you can buy Chimera Pistol.
- Make sure to get Acceptance from Truth and Purpose.
Equipment
You don't need most of the extra gear but you will probably want most of it as each piece of gear solves a problem the build has.
Core:
- Sunfall Axe with Fulmination: Axe special moves have a 1.3x damage multiplier. Beyond that, Sunfall is very well rounded and few weapons can match its stats. It has high speed and durability and decent damage and impact impact, not to mention that it does half
damage--our best scaling elemental damage type because of Fire Affinity--and applies Burning. - Cannon Pistol: This and sweep kick are your bread-and-butter opener. Hit 'em while they're down!
- Gold-Lich Mask: Mage helm with a ton durability and highest total resistance in the game.
- Pathfinder Armor with Cocoon: Middle-weight armor with second best weather defense in the game.
- Orichalcum Boots with Guidance of Wind: Fastest tank boots in the game.
- Brigand's Backpack: High capacity bag that buffs damage and doesn't hinder rolls. Downside mitigated by Infuse Light.
- Calygrey Bone Cage: Provides
damage and life regeneration that lasts basically forever.
Toolbox:
- Brand, Gep's Blade, Radiant Wolf Sword, Hailfrost Axe or Butcher Cleaver: Inferior to Sunfall but still very good. Use against fire resistant enemies or for the sword moveset.
- Chimera Pistol: Use this against tanky enemies to apply Elemental Vulnerability. Reload with Shatter Bullet when you can to apply Pain too.
- Cage Pistol: Use this against hurty enemies to make them hurt less. One shot for

, two shots for
. - Ornate Pistol with Trauma: Keep this loaded with Frost Bullet and use it as an AoE opener. This will do ton's of
and
damage and the slow helps manage multiple opponents in solo play. - Astral Pistol: Use twice against tanky enemies to apply Scorched and Chill.
- Light Mender's Lexicon with Fechtbuch: Necessary for applying Runic Protection. Hold it while killing things to kill them harder.
- Angler Shield: Mostly important because of the status immunities; Mild Petrification in particular for hardcore.
- Jewel Bird Mask: This is very optional. The speed is nice for running around. No enchantment necessary.
- Sky Chimes: Use Welkin Ring before fights with groups or tanky enemies. Can turn the Burning from Sunfall Axe into Holy Blaze.
- Candle Plate Armor: Keep this in your box for fighting the Crimson Avatar.
Legacy Chests
Required:
- Orichalcum Boots: This is the only legacy item the build actually needs.
Suggested:
- Ornate Pistol with Trauma: The enchantment isn't available until Stealing Fire at the earliest and it isn't useful until it is enchanted.
Other solid choices:
- Sunfall Axe with Fulmination: The enchantment isn't available until From the Ashes at the earliest.
- Jewel Bird Mask: Optional and nice to have for travel but I have found I forget to swap back to my Gold-Lich Mask for fights which is not very "hardcore-viable" of me.
- Cage Pistol: You have to finish a main questline and then fight bosses to get this.
- Calygrey Bone Cage: Assuming you are getting the Brigand's Backpack from the Friendly Immaculate it can take a while to get this from Calygrey Chests so I think it's worth putting in a legacy chest.
- Brand with Fulmination: The enchantment isn't available until From the Ashes at the earliest.
- Angler Shield: Getting Mild Petrification to awaken this can be annoying and dangerous.
Tip: The Friendly Immaculate will just try to kill you if you join The Holy Mission of Elatt before you go to see it.
Tip: Enchantments stay on items in legacy chests even when the item is upgraded to the legacy version.
Enchantments
Early-game
- Put Cocoon on your Pathfinder Armor
- Put Guidance of Wind on your Orichalcum Boots if necessary
- Optional: put Unsuspected Strength on an Iron 1h weapon until you can get Sunfall Axe or Brand.
Late-game
- Put Trauma on Ornate Pistol if you didn't get one from the legacy chest.
- Put Fulmination on Brand and Sunfall Axe.
- Put Fechtbuch on Light Mender's Lexicon.
- Put Levantine Secret on all your guns except Ornate Pistol.
Buildings
When you are building your town in New Sirocco I recommend getting these buildings:
- Blacksmith shop: With 5 guns, 2 tools, and a shield you effectively have 7 things to repair. It's worth paying for.
- Food Store: You need either this or some Flour so you can get bread to make tartine.
- City Hall: Needed for many other buildings.
- Chapel: You need to build this to get Elatt's Intervention.
- Enchanting Guild: This build uses this a lot.
- Water Purifier: Getting Sparkling Water is worthwhile because you can always use more stamina regen.
- General Store: If you still need a Brigand's Backpack get it here.
- Gladiator's Arena: If you want Acrobatics you will need this.
Buffs and De-buffs
This build relies on applying the correct buffs and de-buffs before fights to function well. In this section I will outline the buffs and de-buffs commonly available to the build and when to use them.
| All the time | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
> ![]() | |||||
These are a core part of the build and should be up all the time. Marshmelon Tartine isn't required, it's just the best. Any source of Stamina Recovery will work though you should aim for the higher ones.
Tip: Don't sleep; repair! You get damage from Lockwell's Revelation if you don't sleep and with 5 guns, a shield, and 2 tools you have plenty of stuff to repair.
Tip: Additional health and stamina recovery like from Jerky and Clean Water is a good Idea for longer fights.
| Typical fight | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
> > ![]() | |||||
Infuse Light gives the build about a third of it's damage and Blood Bullet--which requires Possessed to function--is a large portion of the healing and utility.
Tip: Infusions stick around through zone changes but your cooldowns will be reset so you can activate Blessed (skill) again.
Tip: If you use Blessed (skill) off-cooldown, you will be able to keep both it and Infuse Light up permanently after a few cycles.
| Defensive buffs | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
> > > > > > > > > > > ![]() | |||||
Use these buffs against anything you are afraid of. You usually don't need all of them but if you you are playing hardcore and don't know what the enemies damage types are it's better safe than sorry.
Tip: You can quickly shoot something twice with Cage Pistol by using Blood Bullet. This will cause both the Sapped and Weaken de-buffs.
| Extra damage | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
> > > > > > > > > > > | |||||
Each of these will add a little more damage to each of your swings. Apply as many as you think you need.
Tip: Dreamer's Root and Poutine will make you tired and activate Lockwell's Revelation which gives a ton of damage.
Tip: You can quickly shoot something twice with Astral Pistol by using Blood Bullet. This will apply Scorched.
| OOC reloading | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
> > > > ![]() | |||||
Blood Bullet cannot be used out of combat so you should reload with Frost Bullet and Shatter Bullet. Load Ornate Pistol with Frost Bullet for maximum AoE. Load Chimera Pistol with Shatter Bullet to apply Pain and Elemental Vulnerability at the same time against tanky enemies.
Combat Options
For damage you will be using the standard and special attacks of your weapon, preferably Sunfall Axe. Axe combos do a lot of damage because they have a hidden 1.3x damage multiplier. This build doesn't invest much in stamina cost reduction so you have to avoid unnecessary dodging as much as possible. Running sidesteps and blocking are far superior anyway as you can attack much sooner afterward.
Tip: Circle counter-clockwise around most enemies because they all hold their weapons in their right hands and sometimes they will just miss you with their attacks giving you a free opening.
Tip: Shoot enemies to reduce their Stability. Once they are at half you can start attacking safely.
- Blood Bullet: Heals you, reloads your gun, and applies the gun's de-buffs in combat.
- Sweep Kick: Knocks over enemies with Confusion in one try regardless of if they are blocking or how much stamina they have. Good for creating openings so you can attack safely.
- Mana Ward: Gives you 4 seconds of invincibility on a low cooldown but makes you easier to knock over. Good for making risky actions like reapplying Infuse Light and healing safer.
- Great Life Potion: This is the best (safest) healing "ability" in the game, bar none. I always carry 6 or more of these.
Anywhere Sunfall Axe appears in a combo it indicates you hit 'em with the axe.
Anywhere Blood Bullet appears in a combo it indicates you can also shoot 'em if your gun is already loaded.
Axe combos:
- Fast: 1st normal, special, retreat
- Burst: 1st special, special, ...
- Chain: ...normal, special, normal, special, normal, special...
| Bread and butter | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
> > > ![]() | |||||
This is the easiest way to kill most enemies. Knock them over and do a few hundred damage with the axe before they get up. You won't usually need more than one but rinse and repeat as necessary as it's on a 15 second cooldown.
| Invincible | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
> ![]() | |||||
This is a good way to handle groups of many weak enemies because you have so much Protection they can't knock you over even with low impact resistance.
| Shotgun | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
> > ![]() | |||||
I have found that the best way to deal with crowds is to attempt to get them close together and shoot them with an Ornate Pistol enchanted with Trauma and imbued with Frost Bullet. Each enemy caught in the cone will take damage from the cone and explode, potentially overlapping, often killing the entire group or severely damaging them. Regardless they will be affected by Slow Down and Crippled so you can kite them easier.
| Mass confusion | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
> > > > > ![]() | |||||
You can change targets mid-fight to confuse multiple enemies in a short time period with the Cannon Pistol. With good positioning you can Sweep Kick the lot.
| So I started blasting | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
> > > > > ![]() | |||||
If an enemy has me on the ropes I have found running away and shooting it to be a safe and effective solution. Unloading your guns at something will usually also help you find one that you loaded with Frost Bullet earlier so you can kite and heal.
| Safe Healing | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
> ![]() | |||||
I cannot stress enough how good pressing these two buttons can be, especially when you're losing a fight. Mana Ward gives you 4 whole seconds of invincibility and Great Life Potion will put you back to 100% health with no burnt health.
Damage
The chart below shows that if you use use absolutely every buff at your disposal your axe will swing for about 161 damage. With an axe special, special combo that will deal 1,046 in less than three seconds. Using mixed damage (![]()
![]()
) means you don't really need to worry about enemy resistances most of the time but if you feel like an enemy has a lot of ![]()
![]()
resistance try switch to Brand or de-buffing them.
Tip: Spiritual Communion only represents a 2.5% marginal increase in damage against when fully buffed for bosses and a 2.9% increase with basic buffs for adventuring which is why I think Divine Assistance is better.

Defenses
Rather than talking about stats I would like to talk about the things that get my characters killed.
- Elemental OHKO: There are few enemies that deal a ton of elemental burst damage through lasers or overlapping explosions. Between Cage Pistol, Barrier, Elatt's Barrier, Boons and Elemental Resistance these shouldn't be unreasonably dangerous if you prepare for the fight and keep your health high.
- Wombo-combo: Getting knocked down over and over is annoying but rarely lethal, especially not with the proper defensive buffs. You can roll away before you can run away when you are getting up off the ground. Going on the offensive with Sweep Kick is also a good way to let your Stability bar recover.
- Running out of stamina: Poor stamina management will get you killed. Running is better than blocking is better than dodging. You should always have Stamina Recovery active. Use Mana Ward and Great Endurance Potion in emergencies.
- Statuses: Use a tent to activate Miasmic Tolerance and carry Panaceas.
- Panic and Breathless: Use Marathoner to wait them out.
- Plague, Extreme Poison, Extreme Bleeding, Blaze, Holy Blaze: These hurt enough that you usually need to cure them as soon as you finish the fight but you don't need to stop fighting to do so.
- Mild Petrification: This is what Angler Shield and Panacea are for.
- Slow Down and Crippled: Swift Foot, Guidance of Wind, and Marathoner.
- Meeka Fever: This can cause Needs: Hot so cure it ASAP.
Weather Immunity
Per the Temperature page, you need to have 31 hot and 36 cold weather defense to be completely immune to the weather. This build is weather immune without any buffs because of it's equipment and passives.
